Ashley Eliza Williams
Ashley Eliza Williams received her undergraduate degree in studio art and art history at The University of Virginia in 2009, where she was also an Aunspaugh Fellow. In 2013, she completed her MFA degree in painting at The University of Colorado. She has taught at The University of Colorado, Colorado State University, and Metropolitan State University in Denver. Recent residencies include the MASS MoCA North Adams Project, Shangyuan Art Museum International Residency, Beijing China, Alte Schule Hohenstein, Hohenstein, Germany, Compeung Residency, Doi Saket Thailand, Anderson Ranch, Snowmass, CO, and RedLine, Denver, CO. She currently lives in North Adams, Massachusetts. "I believe that a direct relationship exists between the natural landscape and the expansiveness of the human imagination. Our capacity for creative thought is proportional to the complexity of our environment. As the wilderness is displaced by humanity, the scope of our emotional expression narrows in order to fit within a more constrained reality. Painting is a way for me to expand my library of perceptions, an attempt to remember ancient landscapes and dream of new ones, and to preserve memories that allow us to imagine different ways of interacting with nature and each other."
